Tea Party On-the-Go Anti-Procrastination Tuesday

I am seriously procrastinating this week! My husband and I are taking a quit holiday this weekend but this week seems to be full of random to-do lists. I really need to figure out what to pack, and I’m hoping to be able to pack light, as in warm weather clothing. Still, there is always time for tea.

Wednesdays I spend at a Homeschool co-op, waiting for my oldest son to take three classes. The first class starts at 10 AM. The last one ends at 3:45 PM. Yes, that sounds like a lot of waiting time, and it would be, if there were not many of us moms doing the same thing.

I threw my hot pot, my tea pot, a few tea cups and some snacks in my bags for a tea party on-the-go.

This was a no-frills tea party which meant no sugar cubes, no creamer, and no snack plates. I brewed one pot of tea, which was lychee. Lychee is a great no-frills tea because it is naturally sweet.

I grabbed some simple cookies from Trader Joe’s. Those Meyer lemon cookies are so amazing! The kettle corn cookies are like eating a popcorn ball, without the work.

I wrap each cup snug so they won’t chip or break during transport. I usually wrap my tea pot the same way. When someone walked by and commented on the cute table or the fun idea of having tea, I invited them to join us. It’s surprising how many women won’t “impose” but I made them, if they had time. Everyone enjoyed it.

Nail and Cuticle Maintenance

It’s too bad gray days don’t give us an internal sense of joy. I love the gray, wet weather of winter but that is not the default mood for the average northwesterner.

We just ended an exciting week of snow. What was suppose to be a passing day or two, developed into a full-on storm. As someone said, “what do you call a week off between Christmas break and winter break?” Clearly, without extra schoolwork, no job to drive to, and warmth of a comfortable home, our house was full of winter snow joy.

So now that play week is over, I have to get myself back in order; ready to be in public. My hands get trashed by being in water and chemicals. I wear gloves whenever my hands are at risk of either. These Aloetouch Nitriles are awesome! I get the large so I can take them off and put them back on several times to save on using too many throughout the day. (I can’t use my touch screen phone with them.)

By the end of the week, my cuticles are dry, cracking and sore. My go-to hand cream is Gold Bond Ultimate healing lotion with Aloe. Of course lotion can only do so much. Eventually, I have to do cuticle maintenance.

The usual tool would be cuticle nippers. I can’t use these efficiently.

Usually I end up cutting myself. Instead, I use the dremel tool that came with my nail dryer. I think it is suppose to be for acrylic nails but I have found it does a beautiful job sanding all the rough spots of my cuticles. The best part- doing this makes my nails grow straight and strong. Of course, the skin on my hands and around my cuticles is pretty thick and tough from years of manual labor. I don’t know how this would be for soft, gentle skin.

The only other step I like to do to keep up my nails is to buff them. The concept is simple. You start with the course side and work around to the smoothest side. The end result is a beautiful, shiny nail.

Of course, I have to be able to keep up my hands and nails at home but I’m still looking forward to using my Groupon to try out shellac nails. My efforts help my hands stay healthy but I want my nails to look fabulous for my daughter’s wedding. Do you get your nails done at the salon? Have you tried shellac nails? Snow Days

Well I have been a bit distracted. The Puget Sound area has been hit by a rather aggressive snow storm. We weren’t expecting much, but by Wednesday, we realized the weather report was not going to go according to plan.

Tuesday, January 17th

There was nothing pressing at work on Tuesday, so I took a snow day. I expected the snow would be limited on Wednesday and I would work a long day to make up the time.

The drive into work was quite revealing. We don’t have regular TV so my only clue to Seattle area traffic was radio reports and traffic cameras. They can only tell so much, and I did not expect there to be so much snow in Seattle. Fortunately, most people stayed home.

Unfortunately, I overstayed my welcome, attempting to get as much done as possible. I had to drive home in freezing rain. There were a few spin-outs. Two transformer explosions could be seen lighting up the dark sky. My windshield wipers were sticking to the windshield as the temperatures dropped, and a huge tree limb, heavy with snow, crashed down on the highway next to me.

My husband gets home from work around 6:30am and when I asked him how is drive was, he said it was “fine, but you’re not going out there.” I assured him I would be fine and needed to go to work at some point, regardless of the conditions. He must have been praying because my boss called and said it was too bad out to go to work. We all got a snow day!

The temperatures stayed around 23 degrees and it snowed all day. Eventually, not even the dog would venture out.

All in all, we’ve had it really easy. We are warm, and we have electricity and internet. A lot of our friends and family are not so fortunate. When the rain finally comes, it’s going to be a mess around here. Just the same, we are grateful for our very mild, northwest winters.

Anti-Procrastination Tuesday Snow Day

Nothing makes me procrastinate more than a snow day. We have waited all winter for a decent snow day- the kind that makes it absolutely impossible to go anywhere. It snowed a little on Saturday, and it is snowing a little more now. My area does not have enough snow to keep us home.

The snow on the suburban is just what accumulated from the time my husband got home- about an hour of snowing.

I should have had this post done yesterday, in time to link up to New Nostalgia for Anti-Procrastination Tuesday.

The activities I am hoping to get done today are call my hairdresser to make an appointment, work on my One Notebook of my daughter’s wedding, and otherwise get ready to make wedding invitations. Working on wedding stuff is so much more interesting than ironing today.

We are within the critical six month period before the wedding so there is a lot to plan, organize, order, and create. Daughter and I ventured into the snow yesterday to pick up a dress she found for the rehearsal dinner. Oh, is it cute, and we got it for $20. Sorry, the picture on the Macy’s website is no longer active.

While we were out, I opted to take advantage of the Michael’s coupons and get supplies for making the wedding invitations. I was able to get a beautiful selection of paper from Paper Zone, before they announced their store closing. (sad) All that I really needed was the tape.

There are a lot of options for tape these days. I bought a selection so we can work with them and see what works best. My daughter and my friend have designed the invitations and we want to insure they are held together securely. I’m excited to see how the finished product comes out.

I also insisted we purchase some inspiration items. My daughter’s wedding theme is vintage country. It’s an evolving concept. She has changed her colors from a bright, sherbet selection to elegant peacock colors. There are a lot of twists along the way and one is, instead of corsages, of which neither of us are fans, we are making brooches for the “moms.” Moms is loosely defined for our purposes as it includes aunts.

Daughter already made one but I can’t find it to take a picture to share with you. It’s probably just as well since I imagine she will want to keep them a little secretive. It turned out so pretty, and it was easy. It’s so hard to decide whether to buy stuff or make our own. There are pluses and minuses to both options.

One more accomplishment on the wedding to-do list is getting the save the date cards ordered. That was a lot more confusing and expensive than I imagined. I will save the tediousness but there are a lot of printing companies, with a wide range of options, and costs. The frustrating part is after I got them ordered, I got an email for “free- 100 postcards from Vista print.” Really could have used that…

Daughter did not want me to design the cards but I think I did a great job. She agreed, eventually. Besides, she really designed it; I just did the technical stuff.

Believe it or not, I have other children. In the midst of all this wedding planning, my two sons have celebrated birthdays. My youngest was last week. He turned 14. Instead of blogging and reading blogs, I spent all my time putting together a photo album of him. Another printing decision- which photo album company do I choose? I’m waiting for a coupon. The picture snipit is my picaboo design. I really love picaboo, and I’m thinking they are my best option.

Today is my oldest son’s birthday. He is 16. No driver’s license yet. He’s working on it. Instead, I got him two cases of his own label Jone’s Soda. I love it when kids are so easily entertained. He is so happy!

The artwork on the label is a picture Connor drew, and he couldn’t have been happier with my selection.

So I’ve rambled on now. It’s still snowing but I guess I better see if I need to go to work any way. Hoping I get to spend the day reading everyone’s blogs, and getting my ironing done.

Anti-Procrastination Tuesday To the New Year

I’m not big on new year’s resolutions in general, but I do like to reflect on the previous year and assess my goals for the year ahead. Right off the bat, my first goal is to post to my blog consistently. What better day to practice consistent blogging than on Anti-Procrastination Tuesday.

The To-Do List

To start my anti-procrastination To-Do List, I updated my blog layout with a new background. If you haven’t been here before, I had a Christmas theme before. I like to play with my photo editor program to create background tiles and images. Updating my blog is part of my Christmas clean-up.

Christmas Clean Up

Christmas clean-up is my primary To-Do list item. I have seen a few blog posts already about already getting the house back to pre-Christmas order. It’s kind of sad, but also rather satisfying. I’m sad to see the season end but I’m completely satisfied with the length of time we have spent celebrating Christmas.

The kids were so good at getting everything decorated for Christmas, I told them I would put it all away. I haven’t been hugely inspired yet but I did get the tree taken apart.

Never Ending Laundry

In between taking Christmas down, I got a little bit of laundry done. One of my FB friends posted she was sure someone was coming into her house at night and leaving laundry behind. That’s about how I am feeling these days. Still, I insist on ironing about half of everything and my ironing pile is out of control. My goal is to get my ironing board unloaded and my laundry baskets empty by Friday, January 6. I’m dating this goal for greater accountability.

Planning Travel to Arizona

When these two projects are done, I am going to do some research for a short get away to Nevada and Arizona for me and my sweetie. I have read the mere planning of a trip is great for fighting winter blues and also to inspire creativity. I completely agree with this so I look forward to just the planning process. I also find breaking up physical tasks with mental ones keeps me motivated to keep working.

Blogging Away from My Computer

I am trying something new. Actually if you have read my past posts, you will see I have made previous attempts to write my posts away from my computer. I think I first tried with my iPhone. Now I have a little tablet so I am checking out the blogger app. If you scroll down to my post from wednesday, you will see a major problem. I haven't figured out how to flip the photos, or at least ensure they are not being posted sideways.

Card making with family

My cousin is in town so my sister invited us over for an impromptu card making party. Turns out, my cousin had an alterier motive since she needed to make thank you cards for her daughter's bat mitzvah guests. We are just wrapping up as I am typing this post. The table is covered in paper scraps, stamps, and ink.

Christmas Ornament Recipe

I made my Christmas cards (still have to write them and get them delivered)

I have two items I want to get done today before I leave for work.

All the laundry washed, folded and put away, including my work laundry (2 loads)
Mail the cousins’ gifts

Last week, I took some time to peruse Delightful Order blog.

Danita hosts a fabulous link party, Delightfully Inspiring Thursday, which is where I came across Days of Chalk and Chocolate.

Her post was about Christmas Décor and I commented about using cinnamon sticks along with dried oranges to make garland. I also mentioned I used to make cinnamon apple peel ornaments. Jenni wanted to know more.

Now, sadly, I have no photos of the ornaments I have made and I don’t have any this year in my own decorating. You can imagine, I start with apple peels. This is such a great activity after processing a bunch of apples for pie.

For this recipe you need: Apple Peels and Ground Cinnamon. Yep, that’s it.

I’ve heard you can use a blender but I’ve never done it that way. I use a food processor. Just pile a bunch of the peels, about half full, into the bowl and then pour ground cinnamon on top. Start off with about 1/2 cup and keep processing, adding more cinnamon, until a dough is formed. I’ve also heard of adding corn starch but I think it lightens the dough and can also make the dough too dry.

It’s just like play dough and it’s great for playing with the kids. You can even eat it, if you’re like me and like the spiciness of the intense cinnamon. Just roll it out flat and start cutting with cookie cutters or however you want to make your shapes. Cut out a small hole at the top for a ribbon.

This dough will air dry, eventually. However, it’s easier to dry them in a low oven, about 200, just like you would dry orange slices. My ornaments always curled a bit but you can periodically flatten them back as they are drying, if that matters to you.

Delightfully Inspiring Thursday I’ve Been Featured

First Off, I will apologize for my lateness to this blog party. Despite the plethora of technology at my disposal, writing my blog posts is still proving to be complicated.

Fortunately I did get a blog post done last week. I linked it to Danita’s blog, Delightful Order, and her readers made my post her #1 most clicked on link. I think this is pretty exciting. Thank you Danita for having your link party.

So now it’s Thursday again. Time to share a little inspiration. Quite frankly, reading her blog is very inspiring. I’m sure it is why I got into the Christmas spirit this week. Against my practical behavior, I decorated my office at work. Surprisingly I did not have enough left-over or unused decorations from home so I was forced to purchase a few items. Hint- don’t buy Christmas decor this late in the season.

I wish I had my before pictures, from when I first moved in here. Let me tell you, I work in an office with men! Not that this is bad. They just don’t have the need to be decorative. I haven’t worked with the guys since I put up my scanty decorations so I don’t know how they feel about it. I’m in this very cold kitchen/office by myself. Well, except the tires, of course.

I’m feeling a bit more festive now. I did add one more option. If you look at the photo of my desk, you can see my desk top photo.

This is Christmas 2006. See how white it is outside. The child in the window is my “baby.” He is not that little any more. I am very much enjoying seeing this photo every day since I am at work and not at home.

Beauty Tips

Because my daughter and her blog are so super inspiring, I am linking my post to Delightful Order for Delightfully Inspiring Thursday Blog Party.

You’ve probably seen a few of my posts revolve around my daughter and her up and coming wedding. Planning a wedding pretty much takes over all a person’s spare creative thinking. Throughout my days, I am considering whether something will be a good idea for the wedding.

This post is about my daughter’s blog. I am very excited she has decided to do her own blog because she has some really great things to share with everyone. Mostly she blogs about personal care issues. That’s pretty normal when you are a single person. Hopefully you will see how her personal care really comes down to her personal relationship with Christ. That excites me the most.

One product that she is loving lately is Farm House Fresh. I must admit, I am really enjoying their products as well. I currently use the Strawberry Smash and the Whoopie! Cream.

My daughter put a little Strawberry Smash in these little jars I had, added the labels, and shared samples with my friends.

This is the full-size jar of Strawberry Smash I picked up at our local shop that sells Farm House Fresh- Hoity Toity. Aside from a hand full of local retailers, Farm Fresh products are online.

Back for Anti-Procrastination Tuesday

After another long stint of not blogging, I was determined to do a post for Anti-Procrastination Tuesday. It seems no matter how long I go between posts, Amy’s blog encourages me to keep working at it.

Stop by New Nostalgia and see all the great posts linked up for this link party. I always see great ideas and learn new things from her link party participants.

Now I have to explain the previous post (Sunday, Nov 27) in case you happened to see it. If not, just scroll down) It’s a sad excuse for a post so don’t go crazy looking for it. I was trying out some new technology, in hopes of finding a new way to write my posts, even when I am at work, or otherwise on the go.

This is the Motorola Xoom. It is a tablet PC, much like an ipad. We’re not big on Apple computing in our home and we really don’t spend very much money on our technological pursuits. This is in place of the kindle I had, until it was left on an airplane. We were just going to get the new kindle fire but for a little more, we were able to get this Xoom. The fire would have been great, I’m sure. This just does so much more, and is an awesome! e-reader. I’ve been using this table for almost a week now and I’ve already read most of a book (Battle Hymn of a Tiger Mother- great book, by the way).

This brings me to my Anti-Procrastination accomplishments. One problem I have about writing my posts is that I have discovered GIMP photo editing software. This software enables me to edit photos and create whole new images. Because of this, I feel the need to update my blog template. Because of this, I feel I can’t update my blog until I update my template. Crazy, I know.

So now my template is updated a bit for Christmas. I feel much better about the look and I am encouraged to add some new posts this week. One of which will be about this maze we have created in our home since the kids took out all the Christmas boxes. They were in the mood to get them out and I did not want to discourage them. Who knows if the mood would last, and I didn’t want to have to get them all out. My husband was inspired, too, and already got the Christmas lights out. This has to be some kind of record.

Speaking of Christmas lights, I took some photos with my Xoom but because I wasn’t sure how to get them from the device to my computer, I haven’t done anything with them. Getting this post done has forced me to figure it out.

… oh, wait, this is the neighbors house.

Pretty good, huh? We don’t have the huge spread but I like how my husband laid everything out and the pieces he chose. The deer on the left is a new addition this year. The tree will be in the window in a few days.

Where did the month go?

<p>This has been such a fast month.  My work schedule really changed my focus and my daily goals.  Basically, my goal was to come home, see my kids and get my clothes clean enough to wear the next day.  This was the first month I really struggled to keep up on the laundry.</p>
<p>Staying up on my blog was impossible, and I know most bloggers have been there.  I was feeling a bit discouraged until I remembered some of my favorite bloggers, such as http://heidi-heartandhome.blogsot.com, have endured events that prevented them from blogging for a time. Heidi had a tree fall on her house. You should stop by her blog and see how she is recovering.

Still, I am sad I have not shared a couple of life updates. First being, I read a book this month. Yes, I realize this is not monumental news for most. For some reason, I never make reading a priority. I do like to read when I travel so when I went to California this month, I took the book, Unbroken. This book is about Louis Zamparini, 1930's Olympic runner, and his experience in World War 2. It was such a compelling story, I read the book in three days. I think everyone should read this book, but understand, the truth about war is hard to take. Louis is still alive, which makes his story even more amazing.

My dad gave me this book. Actually he gave it to my husband, and my husband was so taken with the story, he highly recommended I read it. My one issue was it was a book. Since I was given a kindle e-reader, I find books to be rather cumbersome and not as much fun to read. I would have used my kindle if we had not left it on the plane a few months back. No worries my husband pre-ordered the kindle fire. At least that was the plan, until he came across a Motorola Xoom tablet for a little more than the fire would have cost.

A tablet is very versatile. It makes an excellent e-reader. I am already half way through another book, Battle Hymn of a Tiger Mother, by Amy Chua. Another great read.

I can also surf the internet rather efficiently. It has a forward and rear facing camera for taking photos, video, and web chatting. Currently, I am attempting to write my blog post on it. I'm not over excited by this process, but I had to see what it would be like.

Being Beautiful in Preparation for Wedding Day

We are in full wedding planning mode. A day doesn’t go by when I don’t think of something we need to have, get, make or plan for, for my daughter’s wedding. There are a lot of details.

Wedding shoe? Maybe?

Reserving the venue and making purchases is the easy part. Staying fit is a bigger challenge. I wasn’t even considering this aspect, but my daughter has it on the forefront of her mind. Imagine that!

She has always been interested in nutrition and skincare. Her latest book of interest is The Beauty Detox Solution by Kimberly Snyder. While she isn’t interested in being this radical with her daily eating, she has adapted some of the concepts. She drinks a green smoothie almost daily.

I have been benefitting from this as well. I really like the green smoothies because they are not very sweet. The idea of a smoothie sounds good but I can barely handle a fruit smoothie. I had actually changed to drinking more vegetable smoothies any way. Now my daughter makes them and I get to have her left-overs.

Juicing is very popular again but we just blend. You have to blend the vegetables in a certain order to break them down as much as possible with a blender, for instance you add the lettuce first. I know those vita-mix machines will blend everything at once to a thin consistency. The cost of the machine doesn’t seem worth it to me, at this point. I also know it is on my daughter’s registry. Her fiance eats very similarly (yea!) so he would like for them to have one.

I love that my kids consider their food choices. My 15 year old son even said to me this morning he needed to cut back on the amount of milk he drinks.

While my daughter was making her smoothie, and telling me about this book, I decided to mix up a facial mask. She also suggested a combination of foods for an eye mask. I mashed blueberries and mixed in a 1/2 tsp of tumeric, then added aloe vera gel. The blueberries are a very powerful antioxidant and also very moisturizing for the delicate skin around the eyes. The tumeric aids in circulation which helps keep the blood from pooling to create the dark circles. Of course aloe vera is a gentle moisturizer that also thickens the mask and adds a nice, cooling effect.

My face mask today was a blend of grapes and parsley juice mixed with plain yogurt and clay powder. The grapes are for diminishing fine lines and other antioxidant benefits. The parsley is to brighten the skin and reduce redness. My skin has a natural red undertone so I’m always using products (mostly parsley) to balance the red.

Yogurt is an antibacterial and moisturizer. The clay absorbs impurities and adds thickness to the mask. I use this right away so it is a little soupy but then I leave it out for a few hours or overnight. I keep the leftover in the fridge and use within a couple of weeks.

Sorry, no after photos. I like home spa treatments because they're fun to make using fresh ingredients I already have.

Wedding Season Has Begun

My daughter is getting married. Yea! I have mixed feelings about the whole wedding planning process. I wasn’t going to get married so I never put much thought into the events of my wedding day.

I loved this veil. My daughter was amazed by the crazy amount of tulle. Wedding fashion was very different in 1992.

My daughter is completely opposite. She should be since I have raised her to be a planner. She was planning her birthday parties at the age of eight. Before you think that is so great you have to know I told her I would throw whatever party she wanted if she planned it but if she didn’t plan it, who knows what kind of party she would have. She had a date book by the age of 10.

It’s no wonder she has been planning her wedding day since she met the man of her dreams two years ago.

Things are happening super fast. She found her dressed after just one shopping trip. No, I am not posting pics- at least not yet.

She was only able to include myself and one of her aunts so we came up with a great idea for a party to share the moment with the rest of our friends and family. The “Say Yes to the Dress” party marked the beginning of all the wedding planning festivities.

This party was a great success. I actually did most of the planning, right down to a game about the wedding dress. Everyone got into two-person teams and using pictures of wedding dresses, designed a dress for the bride. This picture is a little out of focus but it was kind of funny.

As a party favor, we made treat bags that included a sample of Farm House Fresh products. We had a jar of the Strawberry Smash double moisturizer out for everyone to try.

We also included a cake pop in each treat bag, wrapped in cellophane of course.

I’m looking forward to posting more about the wedding plans as the year progresses. The wedding is in June but I already feel like it’s too soon. Lucky for me, I am not doing all the planning, just the paying.

Inspiration Re-Direct

Rainbows always inspire me.

Do you you ever notice when you get inspired to do something, your inspiration wanders a bit? I have a sort of creative A.D.D. As soon as I start a project, I find about three other tasks that “must” get done now.

Gotta squeeze the limes before they go bad. Seems I always have more fruit than we can eat so I cut it up and freeze it for smoothies later.

This used to bother me, and even restrict my ability to complete a project. Now, however, I embrace my short attention span. In this revelation, I have also learned a special benefit to a short attention span. In the interest of staying on point, I will explain this benefit at the end of my post.

Two ways I deal with my inability to stay on task are to keep a “to-do” list handy and to keep about three activities to which I can bounce around. It seems working on one activity causes me to think about the other activity. By keeping multiple activities available, I can redirect my creative thought process. The list helps me remember what I was doing last.

For regular followers, you may notice I have updated my blog background. This is a result of working on a game I am doing at my daughter’s “Say Yes to the Dress” party. As I was developing the game, I got distracted with a picture, which led me to creating the cup and cupcake cutout. I also learned a few new things about using Gimp, which helped me work on the party game.

My party game is coming along nicely, actually. I’m very happy to be updating my blog for the new season. I’m really glad to have a post ready for Anti-Procrastination Tuesday. Be sure to check out Amy’s blog. Her blog really encourages me to stay on task, and I learn a lot of great family and home-making techniques.

The point I want to make about the benefit of a short attention span is the ability to forget the bad and negative moments of your life, particularly if someone has wronged you in some way. You can’t change how people behave. You can only change how you respond. If you find you need to forgive someone, even for small wrongs, you need to put it behind you and truly forgive them. Part of that is the forgetting about it. I don’t mean this in a surface-type of forgetting, where you continue to hold a grudge. If you redirect your thoughts on the subject to something beneficial and positive, you are more prepared to forgive and forget. Make that short attention span work for you!

Settling Into Routine

My husband and I, celebrating 19 years of marriage this past August.

I have been living fast and furiously the last couple of weeks. After ending the Summer on a high note of great family time, we reluctantly crawled into another school year. Our kids have a mish-mash of classes so getting into a schedule takes a couple of weeks. The last scheduling hurdle is adjusting to the 6:30am band class which starts this coming week.

Really, though, it is nice to have the kids focused on their classes and into normal sleep routines. I like having an agenda each day, even when that agenda is to do nothing. That is how this weekend went- yea!

Ok, I didn’t actually do nothing, I just let the day dictate what I got accomplished. Mostly, I folded laundry but in between loads, I looked through magazines. A recipe for honey vanilla ice cream jumped out at me. I am a sucker for honey and it was a custard recipe.

I have been procrastinating making ice cream even though I had a 1/2 gallon of heavy whipping cream in the fridge. Costco has the best heavy whipping cream and it is pretty economical to buy it in a 1/2 gallon, but what do you do with 1/2 gallon of heavy whip? Fortunately the best heavy whip makes the best ice cream. Since I started doing this, I have a hard time eating store-bought ice cream. I am rather lazy in getting it done though, which is probably better for my waist line. Still, someone bought the cream so I had to make the ice cream.

When Costco had a coupon at the beginning of summer for a Cuisinart counter ice cream maker, I knew I had to have it. It ended up being $25. My daughter bought one to put in her hope chest. I had been using an old wooden one but it was loud and took a lot of work. Lucky for me it was damaged when I flooded our basement earlier this year. (That’s another story.)

I cooked the custard before church so by the time we got home, it was ready to throw in the pre-frozen container. I set up the machine and the ice cream was ready in about 15 minutes.

The recipe is as follows:

3 c heavy cream
1 c milk
1/2 honey
1 vanilla bean, split
1 tsp vanilla extract
4 lg egg yolks

Heat the first 4 ingredients in a saucepan over med heat, about 5 min. Whisk 4 yolks in a heat proof bowl. Drizzle 1 c hot cream mix while continually whisking egg yolks. Add yolk/cream mix to remaining cream in saucepan and heat until slightly thickened, about 5 min., whisk continually while heating. Pour custard through fine sieve and scrape seeds from bean into mix. Add vanilla extract. Cool at least 1 hour. Follow instructions of your ice cream maker.

Like I said, this machine took a whole 15 minutes or so to harden the custard. The cooler the custard, the faster the maker will work. My only complaint is that 4 cups of milk really doesn’t make that much ice cream. Funny how the thought of drinking a glass of milk does not appeal to me but frozen, I could eat four cups.

I am sorry I cannot give credit to where I found this recipe. I thought it was either Real Simple or Country Home but I couldn’t find it on their websites. It never occurred to me I would be sharing about making this recipe.

Just Couldn’t Keep Up the Blog While Traveling

I have missed too many good blog posts while we have been traveling this summer. I thought I would be able to keep up but while my home computer is great, my work computer is too slow. Our traveling computer was just as frustrating. I didn’t really want to be on the computer much while traveling any way.

Actually, my husband and I did something totally spontaneous for our 19th anniversary. We traveled without aid of any computers- not even a GPS. It was crazy, walking out of our hotel, not knowing what direction to head to find breakfast. After wandering around the city for almost thirty minutes, with no good restaurants in sight, we ended up eating in our hotel. We had to do that for dinner, too. How did we every travel before?

The rest of that trip was just as adventurous but those are tales for another post.

I will share a bit of our Summer family vacation. It was obvious earlier this year we needed to make a big effort to get away with our three children. Our daughter has been dating a young man for a short while and we knew she intended to marry him. This would be our last Summer as a single family unit. Next Summer, our family will be one member more.

Nothing was set in stone, that is there had not been a proposal, when I made our plans to visit Southern California. As the Summer rolled on, the ring eventually came.

We didn’t have any real plan, except to see my brother and get wedding advice from my once wedding planner sister-in-law. She is very good at giving advice about this subject; mostly because she is a good listener and she knows all the details of orchestrating a wedding.

My brother and SIL live in Huntington Beach, CA. We happened to be there for the US Open… of surfing, that is. Visiting the town and beach area made Disneyland look not-so-busy. It seems there were about 80,000 people there. We went one evening to check everything out. I think we would have stayed longer if it hadn’t been as cold as it was. Really, there wasn’t a lot to see since no one was surfing when we went. Our sweet boys were very unimpressed by the incredible amount of skin and they were rather uncomfortable. I like that about them.

Of course we took the obligator trip to Disneyland. Huntington Beach is really pretty close. We just went for one day. Everyone tells us all the great things about Disneyland. I know, I’ve been. It’s fine and we were mildly entertained for what it was. We just are not amusement park people. Really, it wouldn’t matter if we went on a less crowded day or any number of other things people say that make Disneyland more enjoyable. God has created an amazing world to go see. That’s my amusement park!

I loved San Diego! I could, and will, go back. I loved everything about it, especially the beach, where we got to watch the military aircraft flying. Wow!

I think the kids would have liked it a bit more if there had been some shade at the beach. That was a little hard to take for too long, so we didn’t stay very long. All things considered, I actually prefer the Oregon Coast, or the Northern Cali coast. Quite frankly, the beaches in So Cal are very dirty. Why do so many people think Earth is their trash can? We watched a woman spill a drink in a restaurant and then walk away, without getting help to get it cleaned up. My husband had to get someone to clean it up.

My brother was such a sweetie and took us surfing. My kids were up first. I wanted them to get their time. I was going to get out there but it was a lot colder than it should have been, plus the NAZI party of the beach patrol closed down surfing at our part of the beach. Ok, they were allowing surfing at Huntington but not five miles down the road, where there were obviously less people? So I’m a little outraged, I guess. I really didn’t get it.

This was by no means our kids’ dream vacation. We got to see our family and we didn’t have to do any house work. I know they appreciated the break from the daily routine. We appreciated and enjoyed being with them. They are so grown up, and yet I still think of them as my sweet babies. (I don’t tell them this though.)

Where Women Create Magazine Give-Away update

Well Hello! It has been about a week now since the Where Blogger’s Create blog party at My Desert Cottage. I have been enjoying reading about everyone’s spaces. Thank you so much, everyone, for your comments to my post.

There were a couple of questions within the comments I thought I would address. Leanne, from Provoking Beauty, asked if the shades were drawn because it was a hot day or to keep from sun fading issues. It was just a hot day the day the picture was taken. Also, when I am in my office in the morning, and the sun is out, I usually have to keep the blinds down to keep the glare off my computer.

Violet, at Create Beauty, asked if I liked VW’s. YES! My first car was a 1966 VW bug. I helped my dad rebuild an engine for it and new everything about that car. It was yellow. I kind of wish I still had it. Violet did a post on What Bloggers Drive. You should stop by- hers is purple. It is so super cute. I love that she named her car Gracie Lou. That’s my friend’s dog’s name. Oh, and the pictures she posted are amazingly adorable!

The over-riding theme within the comments was how this blog party helped many of us get our creative spaces clean and tidy. It was just the right kind of encouragement to get organized so we could let others see our space. It really doesn’t matter if you clean up for this party. We don’t mind the mess; only that you came.

Now for the important matters. I have all the comments from my Where Bloggers Create post collected. I will keep collecting through today. Where Bloggers Create 2011

I finally got my office pretty organized and cleaned up, and without my daughter’s prodding. This event is my motivation. While a clean creating space is not a criteria for participation, I wanted to share my space, not my mess.

My space is purely escape-oriented. I do not create anything to make money. Whatever I do in this office is completely at the whim of the mood of the day. While this is my room, I love it when my kids come to do a project or just to hang out with me. I even share my computer, on occasion.

I do crafts of all sorts; whatever strikes me at the time. I have bead stuff for making jewelry, card-making stuff, and of course, I sew.

One reason this room is so essential to my daily life is because it houses my collections and things I have a hard time moving on. I do have a rule now that if I can’t display it, I probably need to get rid of it. My daughter has to stay on top of my collecting so I don’t keep everything. Isn’t there a blog party about collections? Maybe I should post to that some time.

I tried putting everything away and making my shelves sort of bare and stream lined. That is not a very appealing look, to me. I like the idea of it, and it is so much easier to clean, but it was just too boring and took away my creativity. I am very happy to just sit in my office and look around.

Many of the items I have kept are things that have been given to me by all the grandparents. The light colored box in the photo on the left is full of old gas station receipts from my parents. Why did they keep these? It is kind of fun to look at today though- $.35 a gallon in 1969!

The hat in the photo on the right is from my father-in-law. It was his Balmoral Bonnet. That’s a type of Scottish hat the Highlanders wore. He gave it to my son just before he died. I especially like that my FIL was able to give it to my son in person.

I bought this vinyl butterfly from Uppercase Living last year. I just now put it on the wall, for these photos. I don’t know why it took me so long. I am very happy with the look- a nice contrast to all the dimensional objects on the wall, and I love that it matches my hanging file.

Something else I like to hang up in my office are my children’s projects and any other artwork from the kids in my life. The gold framed calligraphy was done by my daughter. In the upper right, inside the vine-trimmed frame are two pictures drawn by my very artistic niece. I love the artwork she gives me so I display it wherever I can.

Oh, I don’t know if you noticed the recent issue of Where Women Create, sitting on the desk. I would love to pass this along. Motivate Me Monday Jell-o Fruit

I love Jell-o. Whenever we have a family get-together, my family expects me to make something out of Jell-o. They have a right to expect it after twenty years of doing it.

For our 4th of July get-together with our friends, I made one of my favorites. Fake fruit. It’s pretty simple, but a little labor intensive.

Cut lemons, limes and oranges in half, scoop out the fruit and rinse them out.

Make the Jell-o with only half the water. I use 1 cup of boiling water to dissolve the Jell-o and then 1 cup of ice so the Jell-o sets up very quickly. I do let the fruit sit on the counter a bit before I put them in the fridge so I don’t slosh them around.

Fill the shells as full as you can. When the Jell-o hardens, it sinks in a bit.

Everyone gets a kick out of these fruits. I am sure I did not come up with this on my own. I must have seen the idea somewhere. Have you ever made these, or seen this idea somewhere? I would love to know.

Where Bloggers Create 2011

While I learned about blogging several years ago and had started my blog as a simple, online journal of my family life, I was truly inspired to blog when my friend introduced me to Where Bloggers Create II.

I was too late last year to participate so I used this inspiration to motivate me to get my blogging space in order and participate this year. Towards the end of May, I could not find any information about a blog party. I figured it would be around the same time as last year but June started and still, no information.

Fortunately I visited my friend’s blog, Blessings From Our Nest, and saw the link in her sidebar. She is a consistent blogger so it figures she was already in-the-know.

I’m kind of tired when I get home from work each day but I am re-finding my inspiration so I can get this room in order. I hope you will come back and see what I accomplish. I’ll share updated photos, regardless of how far I get.

At the very least, stop by My Dessert Cottage on July 15th and see everyone else’s posts. It’s a lot of fun, and very inspiring.

Happy Father’s Day

We’re not big on celebrating random holidays. Every day is a gift. I like to think there is a reason to celebrate every day. I tell my family not to do anything for Mother’s Day because EVERY DAY is Mother’s Day.

This means every day is Father’s Day, too.

My husband is an awesome father who loves his children completely. I am also so very grateful for my father. We are blessed to have him around, to help us be better parents. The influence goes from generation to generation. I know my sons will be great fathers, too.

Help When I Didn’t Even Ask, or Didn’t Know I Needed

Working full-time is a big adjustment from being stay-at-home mom. I don’t think it’s the time that’s hard but the time on top of my mom-job. Even though I don’t do as much at home as I used to, I still try to maintain a presence.

The reality is, my presence at home lately as been just that- present. I come home and am so tired. I make time for daily interacting with the kids and husband. I don’t make time for home-making, which is usually exhibited in my many baskets of laundry, waiting to be folded.

To my great delight, daughter is very gracious. She has stepped up to the plate of keeping the order in the home while I’m gone. Since she has been so helpful, without asking usually, we have turned this into a job for her. I don’t know what I will do when she gets a job.

Last night when I left for work (at 4:30pm), daughter was touching up undone painting around the house. She called me at midnight to see when I was coming home because she had a surprise for me. I contemplated what that might be.

When I got home, at 5:00 am, even in the dark, I could tell something was very different about the laundry room. Our backdoor enters through our laundry room and it is the one room we have not painted, ever. It was not pretty, until yesterday.

Sadly, I don’t have before pictures. Of course, I’m not sure I would post them. The room was dingy and dusty. I didn’t have very good order, though not from a lack of trying. Too much stuff, too little space. Now, the color is clean and fresh. I like how she put the blue behind the machines.

I put this shelf here early on but have always had the wrong things on it, in the wrong order.

These jars a great example. I had a ton of them, in a basket, on that shelf. Daughter condensed them and stuck them in the cabinet.

My first thought when I saw the new paint was how great it looked. My next thought, unfortunately, was that it would have been nice if she had talked to me first. I quickly got that thought under control. I don’t have time to get the laundry room in order. I NEED HELP, and I can’t always see where I need help first. Sure, there are a few things I would have done differently or maybe even some things that I see to be done still. I can always do them later, IF I get the time.

Thank you, daughter, for your huge help. I love the laundry room. I know the way it looks effects everyone in our home, as well as those who come to our home. What a great surprise.

Anti-Procrastination Tuesday First Summer Boat Ride

Good morning! Anti-Procrastination Tuesday is my favorite link party because it really helps me get on track and stay on track in my pursuit of homemaking.

Of course, now that I am working full time, the ability to procrastinate is oh, so strong.

I make folding laundry into a game, with a reward when I am done. Even then, I usually have at least one load sitting in my basket. Keeping up with the ironing is a challenge, to say the least.

Still, I am not so driven I can’t see a good opportunity when it comes. This weekend, we were treated to gorgeous weather. My husband and I were home at the same time, with no pressing commitments (we did leave church very quickly, because of the tide). Being on the water was an order!

There is always time for laundry later.

Apparently we were not the only ones with this idea.

Now, had the weather been not-so-good, I would have worked on my sewing projects. I guess that will have to wait, again.

Then after that, I will have to get on to writing transcripts for my son’s 9th grade year.

For now, I must quit procrastinating getting off to work.

Outdoor Wednesday Monterey Weekend

I will confess to needing to be quick quick with this post. I am headed out already this morning but I didn’t want to not share about my weekend.

My husband and I ran away for a short holiday. We took advantage of my cousin getting married in Carmel to make a fun get-away. With my new work schedule (two months now!), my husband and I have to be very diligent in making time for each other. I was amazed at how much I needed this break.

I made relaxation a priority. While the weather wasn’t spectacular, it was warm enough and not raining; a nice change from home.

The thing I want to share most about is seal pup season.

We got to see the new seal pups at Whalers Cove in the Point Lobos Nature Reserve.

Pretty cute, huh? We didn’t know where we were headed when we took our drive but I’m glad to have the few minutes we spent at this park. It was a rare treat to enjoy seeing these chubby creatures.

Outdoor Wednesday Leaving Work

I have never been a big out-door person so I find it rather amusing that I keep posting about things outside. I am linking this post to Outdoor Wednesday at A Southern Daydreamer.

Of course I do have a rather outdoor job, working at the airport.

Don’t you just hate it when there is a line to get out of the gate?

As I was leaving work this week, I discovered they are parking airplanes everywhere, including in front of the gate where I normally exit. I have been advised it will be like this all week. Busy week this week!

Yesterday, and today apparently, we were treated to a glorious, sunshiny day. People were obviously taking advantage of the long-awaited warmth as they filled Lake Union with their boats. This photo does not do the moment justice. I took this from my car window. The lake was full of little white sails. It was beautiful!

I also noted my lilac bush benefitted from the sudden blast of sunlight. Yea! I will finally get some lilacs to bring into the house.

This is the planter I put together last Summer. I am so happy with the blooms. It has almost doubled in size . This is just the look I wanted for this brick planter.

Appreciating My Kindle

I have discovered a couple of great programs to make my Kindle even more useful than just a book reader. Getting digital books is super easy but Kindles can be used to read more. The two programs I am using, I found at Kim Komando’s website.

I am sharing the link to Calibre through Kim Komando’s post so she gets the proper credit for sharing about this great program.

The reason this program interested me is because it gives me the ability to send newspapers and blog posts directly to my kindle. I haven’t figured out all the ins and outs of this program but mostly it is simple to use.

The other program I started using isn’t really a program. It’s called a browserlet. I guess that is a new creation of the internet. This simple application, Kindlebility, sends whatever website I want, as text, directly to my kindle. This has been handy because I don’t get to sit at my computer as much as I spend time waiting in my car, and other places. Needless to say, I keep my kindle in my purse most of the time. Lucky for me, I found a great new, big purse!

Travel Safety

It has been too long since I have posted so I apologize for letting life slow me down. Blog updates don’t really take me too long, and I could do them from my phone if I knew how (on the to-do list!). Between getting side-tracked and being indecisive about what to post, I just don’t do it.

Today, I want to share a quick blurb about a travel safety seminar I went to this weekend. It was put on by IHS Training.

This particular seminar was intended for mission trips but most of the information was completely applicable to every-day travelers. The idea is to develop a sense of world travel knowledge without having to endure the hardships first-hand. Some of the concepts were kind of scary but we were encouraged to not become paranoid, just aware.

The gentleman that taught the class, Brian Webb, did a fantastic job presenting the information. There was a lot of information but I didn’t come away with information-overload. I will be a better traveler because of this class.

I don’t have a lot of photos, sorry. If you travel, consider taking a seminar of this nature. A little bit of knowledge can go a long way in making your trip easy and fun. Being unaware of the every-day drama going on around us can turn tragic in short order.

Anti-Procrastination Tuesday Pay It Forward Gift

So Disorganized

I just wanted to watch an episode of “Murder, She Wrote,” but my office is just so disorganized and cluttered. There is no calm in here. It’s all chaos.

A clean desk is the sign of a sick mind, but this is too much of a mess. I have been working at it for weeks now and still, I have not cut down the clutter. How do I get rid of all the cute things? Maybe it would help if I finish one project before I start another?

I did it, though. All the things I thought I wanted to put on ebay, I bagged up to go to my friend’s charity garage sale. My paper crafting supplies are back in their drawer. I even threw a few unnecessary supplies and such away. Use it or lose it!

So you would think I would be able to watch that episode of “Murder, She Wrote” now, huh? Well, my computer needed some TLC.

Turns out wireless printing isn’t so easy. My computer and my printer have not been communicating very well for some time and I just couldn’t put up with it any longer. Now that Spring Break is over, we will once again be into school work, which means printing. It’s frustrating to have a really great printer that won’t print. My printer is now wired to my computer.

I really don’t like wired connections but I want the reliability. I got rid of my wireless mouse sometime ago, too. Wires are such a mess. This is as much as I could get the mess contained.

At least my desk is in order. Notice I’m not showing a photo of the desk behind me? Actually I managed to put a lot of stuff away today. My desk is dust-free, as is the floor under my desk. Now for a little murder!

Anti Procrastination Tuesday Two Things Off My List

Another crazy week, getting adjusted to working away from home. Being mom is priority but it is really fun to be able to do something different now. Of course I can say this because our family doesn’t rely on my income to keep the home functioning. If this wasn’t a job I thoroughly enjoy, I would pinch pennies endlessly to stay home and be mom.

I am very grateful and appreciative of my husband who works so hard so I don’t have to. I also appreciate that he is happy for me to work because I want to.

So while I have not been posting to my blog, I have been reading as many blog posts as I have had time. I don’t always get to comment but my thoughts are with you all! I came across the latest Crazy Domestic post and am sad to see there will not be any more posts. It is for good reason and I am happy for both ladies that contribute to this blog. Megan and Stephanie are both having babies so they need to trim some activities to get ready for the changes. The blog will remain available to read past posts, which I encourage you to do as this has been a very fun and informative blog to me. Congratulations, Megan and Stephanie.

Anti-Procrastination Tuesday is upon us, and I am feeling some procrastination coming on. Kind of ironic, too- I just read a blurb from the Woman’s World magazine (you know, that really thin one at the grocery check-out) about how procrastination can be a good thing. Huh?

It said if you are a procrastinator, it’s because you are “fostering your creativity.” Is that what we’re doing? It continues to say “procrastination actually helps push your best ideas to the fore.” Ok, let’s see if not getting my ironing done, or the ten other things I am not doing results in something useful!

I did manage to get two kind of important things off my to-do list. I got my passport and I called Amazon to have my Kindle replaced. Neither of these items took very long or required much ingenuity. Finding information seemed to be my stumbling block.

My Kindle developed a hairline fracture in the lower left corner of the casing/face- not the screen part, is what I’m trying to describe. I wasn’t sure if my warranty was still good so I researched the issue to see if this was a problem for other Kindle owners. It turned out some other people have had this problem. Aside from learning this, I discovered that Amazon goes above and beyond to take care of any problems you may have with your Kindle. I found the customer service number easily and gave them a call. Actually, they have an interesting service where you enter your number and they call you. I love this! No sitting on hold. How ingenious! The whole call lasted about five minutes. Two days later, I had a new Kindle.

Now as for the passport… Actually, this process is not too bad. I really appreciate being able to enter all the information in a fill-in form that I print at home. What a time saver, and it looks so neat and tidy. The only negative was the finding where to submit my application. The State Department website has two separate links- one for Passport Agency and one for Acceptance Facility. Somehow I didn’t realize they were both live links so I only read about the Passport Agency and thought I had to go to a federal office. This was the cause of my procrastination. Luckily, I listened to everyone else and went where they told me to go. Surprisingly, the US Post Office branch I chose was easy. In fact, I was surprised how slow business was and how quickly I got everything done. Oh, it is Spring Break! No wonder there was no traffic today.

Well I guess I better get that laundry folded before I change my mind, or fall asleep, or both.

Last Birthday Party

When I got sick for my birthday this year, I had to postpone the birthday party my mom wanted to have for me.

She had intended for a group of us to get together for a different kind of tea party- tea and crafting. A friend of hers had taken her to this great tea house that is connected to a pottery and glass craft shop. You can either have a full tea and then craft, or a modified light tea while you craft. The craft that really captivated my mom, and the purpose for going to this particular craft shop was glass fusing.

The tea luncheon was wonderful. The crafting part was a little intimidating since I wasn’t truly inspired to create something. The shop was full of beautiful examples of finished work though. I decided to jump in with a few colors of glass and see with what I came up. By the time I was done with my work, my mind was full of all the things I could come back to create.

The work space was easy and they provide all the tools you need. The glass came in so many colors and forms, even a powdery-sandy form.

I wish I had been watching my mom create her pendant. She is so creative! Everyone did a great job coming up with their own design. I can hardly wait to go back.

This isn’t a very good picture of my mom’s necklace but I wanted you to get the idea of the look. I took photos of all the finished pieces but I didn’t realize my camera settings were off until I had already given the artwork to their owners.

This is my friend’s candle holder. Making it formed is called “slumping.”

My daughter had her square slumped just a little to make it handy for holding her jewelry. Her piece was created by using a flat square as her base, gluing the red mosaic in place and then filling the cracks with the glass dust, or sand. She completed the words with a liquid of some kind. I never did see what that product was.

The name of the place where we did all this wonderful creating is called CreativiTEA, in Bellingham, WA. The tea shop with the fabulous food is The Abbey Tea Garden.

It has been too long since I have been able to post. I started a new job, working full time, and I have been busier than I imagined. It’s a great job and I am so excited about this opportunity, but I miss writing, and reading, my blogs.

While I have been working hard at the airport, I have been able to enjoy a few glimpses of the new 747-800. They have been test flying it between Everett and Seattle. This isn’t a great shot but it was all I could get before they put it away for the day.

Even though I have been filling my days with work, I managed to sneak away for an afternoon of visiting with family. We went to a local thrift shop and I found another item for my 787 collection. I’m not sure what was in this tin, but the purpose of a tin was for the “premiere” of the 787. It was only .99 and I had to have it. What can I say, I’m easily entertained!

I have to rush out the door and get my son to band before heading out to work. I can hardly wait to post again! See you soon.

I am supposed to tell seven things about myself so here it goes.

As I write this, I am compelled to say I enjoy writing. I probably should write more, for a variety of audiences. I just don’t take the time. Blogging has been great for me for the writing aspect.

I have a business cleaning airplanes and I have cleaned everything from helicopters to a Boeing 757.

I really don’t care to holiday at theme parks. Send me to vacation in a big, busy city any time. (My poor children!)

I used to work for Princess Cruises and Holland America Cruise Line. I haven’t thought much about it until recently and realized some of my friends and family didn’t even know this about me.

If I could eat pizza every day I think I probably would. I really love, love pizza.

I completely appreciate it when my husband gives me appliances for gifts. One of my most beloved gifts is my Dyson vacuum, which I received for Christmas the first year we were in our current home. It is an invaluable tool which makes his gift so wonderful. He thought enough about me to make my days so much easier.

(Oh, well, I have to say one more thing now. I am married to the best husband.)

Outdoor Wednesday New 787 Poster

I can’t think of a better post topic for Outdoor Wednesday than the Boeing 787 1000th flight. These are test flights, just so you understand.

In my collection, until I get it framed.

I’ve posted before what a Boeing fan I am so I was very excited when my husband brought me this poster. I suspect he was going to hang it in his office but he was happy to give it to me when I asked. It has a good home.

Onto the outdoor portion of this post…

A couple of test flights after the 1000th flight, I was working on a very cold yet gorgeous day. I was just in time to see that day’s test flight landing. I always seem to be around for the take-offs but not for the landings.

There is a blog that tracks the test flight schedule but it isn’t always on time since they have to make adjustments as they are flying. I waited around, in the freezing cold, until I caught these photos.

This plane is crazy quiet! Neighborhoods around airports across the nation will be very happy as this plane is put into service.

I never get tired of seeing this plane roll down the runway. With Mt Rainier in the background and the setting sun highlighting the airport, this was a beautiful day to be outside.

Anti Procrastination A Few Minutes Before Work

I’m linking, as always, to Amy at New Nostalgia for Anti-Procrastination Tuesday. Her weekly blog party has been one of the best encouragements for me to keep getting things done.

Now, I can’t get on with my post until I announce my first blog Give-Away. I was a little nervous about doing a give-away because I didn’t have a huge item to give. The purpose of my give-away was in celebration of my 40th birthday and I wanted to include my blog readers as a way to say thanks for being a part of my day.

I did a random drawing of all the entries and Donnie at New Blessing Everyday. Her blog is so encouraging and inspiring. Take a look!

I procrastinated getting out of bed today and waited until after 8:30am, just before I had to take my son to band class!

Getting out of bed was not even as hard as getting out of my warm, comfy robe. Some times getting dressed for the day is just too hard.

Ironing a couple of items from my pile got my blood moving.

Now, fully functioning, I made left-over meatballs into Swedish Meatballs with noodles. This is such a simple meal to make, I just couldn’t procrastinate any longer. The hardest part was running to the grocery store to get some mushrooms. I don’t have to use mushrooms but the more I thought about it, the more I wanted the yumminess of mushrooms in the sauce.

For the rest of the day, my anti-procrastination list includes PAPERWORK!!! Last week, I accomplished a pile of filing. This week, I need to make and send out customer invoices, as well as scan and email documents to various individuals. All this great technology that makes my job easier also makes it easier to put off simple tasks.

Isn’t this a beautiful Tea-for-One? I almost got through the entire sale without finding anything I really “needed” to take home. I have so much stuff as it is, I try to be very considerate of what I add to my collection. When I saw this teapot, I knew it was just what I was looking for.

I already had the rest of the set! I found this set at an at-home tea party sale. I didn’t consider buying it at that time but I mention I really liked it. My husband clued in to that thought and bought it for me for that Christmas. I love this tea set! There is something about the magnolia flowers of which I am particularly fond.

This tea set has no markings as to the manufacturer or anything about it. I am sure it is made in China. There is probably nothing of real value in this set, aside from the beauty and my partiality to it.

When I have to simplify my life to just the stuff I can fit on my boat, I hope to still have this tea-for-one.

Outdoor Wednesday Late February Snow

Crazy weather!

This snow wasn’t completely unexpected but it is getting close enough to Spring to be bored with the idea of snow. It hasn’t really materialized enough to keep us from driving. That’s when snow is the worst- “should I go out, should I stay home?”

Notice I am enjoying the snow-storm from inside? This will be short lived as I have to head off to work in a bit. I wonder what the traffic will be like? Hopefully most people have chosen to take a snow day today.

Not Doing Laundry Mosaic Monday

A lot of blogs I visit have beautiful picture mosaics. I made mine using Gimp but I know there is a way to do it through Flikr and other photo posting sites. LIttle Red House has a tutorial.

Some days, I will do just about anything to avoid doing my laundry. I have a very full week ahead so I have to be very planned about when and what I do. Today I am supposed to be getting all my laundry in order. Aside from washing, drying and folding dirty laundry, I have ironing and hanging all the outfits I have worn and will re-wear before washing.

To avoid this task, I tackled a stack of scanning items. These are various items I have decided I can’t get rid of or file away until I have a digital copy. These are mostly pictures the kids have drawn. The stack has been accumulating since last Summer. Maybe I need to visit Anti-Procrastination Tuesday!

When I look at these pictures, I realize how much the kids have grown and how much they have learned over the years. They remind me to focus on the big picture of the learning process and not worry about the daily struggles.

I love this project by my youngest son. He doesn’t care to draw and he worried about doing a “good enough” job on his report about Africa. I love it! He did a great job. This project was actually from last year when he was 12.

My oldest son used to draw dragons over and over. He had pages of them. This is one I kept. I put it in a book of a collection of his school assignments but I wanted to have a digital copy. I use the kids’ artwork to make greeting cards for the grandparents and I think this picture is very card-worthy. This dragon was drawn in 2007. That was a few years ago! He would have been 11 then.

I keep this piece out. It is just too important to put away. This is my daughter’s favorite verse. I still remember when she memorized it. Her personality is such that it is obvious she takes this verse to heart. Maybe that’s why she drew hearts.

Boeing Collection Show and Tell Friday

After a really busy week, and looking forward to a crazy busy week, I find I have a few quiet minutes. I am excited to update my blog and I have decided to join Show and Tell Friday.

Most of the blogs I follow share beautiful posts of dishes and crafts and travel. I could post about the same but today, I am excited to share my quirky collection of all things Boeing. They just rolled out the new 747-8 this week.

Interestingly, I started collecting Boeing items when I was in the 5th grade. I have always had a thing for airplanes.

I have no idea why I had to have this tray at such an early age (10 ish?). This is from the Renton Open House in 1974. I was only three and didn’t even live in Washington at that age.

We always went to the airshow every year. My dad helped with the airplanes. I helped out when I got older. This is my brothers and I next to a 747. Vintage 1976 or 77.

Now it’s all about the 787. Building a new kind of airplane is crazy business. Patience and flexibility is mandatory. I know it will be worth the wait. It is a beautiful airplane.

There are a few other airplane items in my collection. I have been around airplanes my whole life. I love the airport. I am huge Boeing Fan.

That tin in the right corner has airplane shaped chocolates. I ate most of them though. Most of my things I have picked up at Family day or my husband has brought home for me. I know I love his job more than he does- only because I don’t have to be there every day.

Anti Procrastination Tuesday

My big accomplishment was celebrating my 40th birthday. I made fabric flowers, decorated tea-lite candles and packaged them up to give to all my friends. I want to give a Birthday Party in a Bag to one of my readers. Read below to be entered in my drawing.

This month marked my 40th birthday. I had great plans to celebrate. Then I got sick- really sick. I was down for a week and a half, and I am still a little low. I spent my actual birthday at the doctor’s office; my absolute most hated place to be. I am so grateful for all the care my husband gave me, which speeded my healing.

My great plan for celebrating my birthday was to honor as many friends and family as I could. I didn’t make it in time for my birthday, but I am still working on it.

I made a bunch of these fabric flowers and attached them to cardstock. I got the idea from Little Birdie Secrets, one of my favorite blogs.

I took a stamping class to learn how to make these cool tea lites and boxes. I made one for each of my honored “birthday” guests. I bundled the tea lites and flower cards with some chocolates in a decorated bag. This became my “birthday party in a bag.” I just want all my friends and family to know how much they mean to me.

Sharing a Craft Give-Away

I have had a busy couple of weeks. After being sick for a week, all my appointments and work had to be caught up. I never think of myself as over-scheduled but taking a week of time away from me made me really busy. I’m almost caught up now with just a couple more rescheduled activities planned.

Fortunately, I wasn’t so busy this week to miss out on an impromptu Winter boat ride. The sun was out in full force this week, and despite the low temperatures, it was comfortable and the water was beautiful.

Dry storage makes for a fast and easy departure.

We went up river to avoid salt water so we wouldn’t have to clean up too much when we got back.

Spice Rack Change

I’m tired of our counter top spice rack.

My husband liked this and when he was in charge of the cooking, it seemed reasonable for him to have it. It’s mostly useful but obviously has a generic selection of spices. Our cabinet holds a lazy susan full of random spices.

I’m tired of the dirt this rack collects, and the space it takes up. I’ve been considering options.

Simplification is the goal. These containers, purchased for $.61 from Specialty Bottle, are food grade and give me the ability to only have on hand the spices I use. I made quick labels with my PTouch label machine. I know the Cricut and Sillouette users would have great fun with this project. The tins are not magnetic but that is easily achieved with super magnets from the hardware store. I paid $3.99 for 3 but I’m sure they can be found for less. Funny how the magnets cost more than the tins!

These tins are so much fun, I will find other uses for them, too. My husband isn’t really that keen on keeping spices in this manner. He needs them to be “pourable.” I get that, and want it to be easy for him, too. I’ll keep working on this project.

For now, the spice rack is off my counter. Well, at least my kitchen counter.

Love It or Lose It Week 3

A few more items up for re-evaluation.

I really loved this shirt, the day I bought it. It felt comfortable when I tried it on, and it seemed flattering in the dressing room mirror.

I can’t even tell you how much I don’t like this shirt any more. The sleeves are monkey-arm length and the way it hangs makes me look pregnant. I assure you pregnant ape is not the look I am going for these days.

I may have worn it twice in as many years. It really was just making my closet more colorful. This shirt was actually in the to-go bag before I started this challenge.

Lose IT!

Here’s another funny purchase. I really love the color and pattern of this blouse. I bought it but didn’t try it on and figured my daughter would give her blessing, or not. Then I would return it, if need be. It has been in my closet, waiting approval, for at least six months. For this challenge, I wore it to church a couple of weeks ago. Daughter liked it, surprisingly, but I am very unhappy with the boofy-bottom edge. She said I should keep it so I am cutting off the bottom to make it more to my liking.

Funny part- When I took it off, I realized I had worn it to church with the tag on.

Love it, so far.

I found this skirt, hiding in a pile of mending. I really like the idea of this skirt but, once again, daughter says length is the issue. She won’t let me go out of the house if my skirt is too long!

This is a simple fix. I am cutting several inches off the top and redoing the elastic binding.

The Great Clean Out

It’s Anti-Procrastination Tuesday

I know tradition is to wait for Spring to clean all the nooks and crannies of our homes. I just couldn’t wait! Since my work schedule has increased so much, having a very tidy home is mandatory. The kids, and husband, do as much as they can to maintain. The best solution is to keep our home as simple as possible.

Aahhhh, I remember when our home was all new (to us, 2006 remodel). So much of our stuff was still packed away. It was easier to keep my house clean when I didn’t have so much stuff around.

The closets must be cleaned out. The drawers organized.

Even the file cabinets are out of control. Why do I feel the need to keep all this paperwork? If I haven’t looked at it by now, it needs to go.

You can’t always bring a reusable shopping bag, or else you won’t be able to get a paper bag to throw all your paper recycling away.

I even got the freezer cleaned out this week! As I walked in the door one evening, it occurred to me, I could take off my gloves and put them in my purse or keep them on so I could unload the freezer and not get cold. After several days of contemplating doing this seemingly monumental task, it only took about 20 minutes to unload, make a list of everything inside, and put it all away.

It’s been a pretty rough morning already but I’m glad I took a minute to finish this post. Now to finish making chicken fajitas for dinner.

Love It or Lose It Challenge Week 2

Last week I introduced a skirt I was conflicted about keeping.

I decided to wear it to a baby shower to make my decision. It ended up matching with a sweater I just purchased so I have to keep it, at least for a couple more seasons. Now to find the right boots.

This week I have two sweaters that have stayed, unused, in my drawer for at least a year. They were useful when the collared shirt/sweater look was fashionable. I actually really hate the neck line but I keep them, for cold weather days. We’ve had many cold weather days, and I still can’t bring myself to wear them.

When I visited the blog, Made It On Monday, and saw her sweater turned cardigan post, I knew I had to refashion my sweaters. Surprise, surprise, I actually got one done. Well, mostly done. I decided it needs buttons.

I should have made the bias around the neck line more narrow but it is ok. Without buttons, it hangs open and looks a little off. I love the fabric I found to coordinate with the plainness of the sweater. I chose a blue/gray plaid fabric for my gray sweater but I also started making a skirt with a piece of remnant fabric that cost about $3. I have decided to coordinate the sweater with my new skirt.

Love It or Lose It Challenge

I thought I saw this challenge a few days ago. I had a little trouble re-finding the specific post a couple of days later but the concept stuck with me. I went through my closet and found a few items. As you can see, the post is right where it should be. Click the picture to get there.

I have worked at keeping my closet under control. I am not the best dresser and I struggle with what goes with what. I love color so I am at great risk for wearing too many pieces, with too much color, all at one time.

The simplest way I found to combat this issue is to have a small collection of clothes. Aside from a half dozen folded sweaters, some long and short sleeve knit shirts (mostly for work) and my underwear, these pictures are all the clothes I own. It’s possible there would be more if some of my clothes were not in my daughter’s closet.

While I’m excited to move unwanted clothes out, the challenge is to give a few pieces a second chance and decide if I “love it,” or will I “lose it.” This is my first item. My daughter has wanted me to get rid of this almost since I brought it home. I got it because it is long and I need long skirts in the winter. I love the plaid print. Daughter says the print, and the length, make me look old. Definitely something I am going to avoid as much as possible. My goal is not to dress like my daughter. I need an appropriate style. Let’s see if this skirt is worthy of residing in my closet. Now if only I could find a good pair of boots to go with it.

Breaking Up the Day

No matter how many times I read the story of Noah’s Ark, I always breath a sigh of relief when I get to the part where the water starts receding. Genesis, chapters 8 and 9. The day starts, only me awake. My morning quiet time is intended to be mellow and reflective; a fresh start to the new day. I choose to settle my mind on the promise of the rainbow.

I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth. 14 And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud: 15 And I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh. Sunrise, December 31, 2010

I have been reading the One Year Bible for many years now and generally do my reading and prayer time in the morning. This is the first break of the day. My days seem to work out better when I start slowly, and when I fill my mind with God’s Word.

Homemade Black-Cherry Jelly on English Muffins

As the day progresses into late morning my mind fills with thoughts of big accomplishments. I turn on the espresso machine, maybe toast some English muffins, and turn up the radio so I can hear it, sitting in the other room.

Making Broccoli and Bacon Quiche

Hopefully by late afternoon, I’ve cleaned a room, ironed some laundry, and prepared some food for a meal or two. Time to sit and savour a bite.

The night time begs for quiet once again. I like to sit and work on small projects, probably in front of the television, or the quiet of my office. It isn’t too long before my eyelids get heavy and I am ready to crawl into bed. Tomorrow is another day.

I hope your day is full and accomplished, but not too full. Break up your business and just sit for a minute or two. How do you break up your day?

Welcome 2011

I have spent the first day of the new year enjoying everyone’s blogs. There is so much creativity and enthusiasm for daily living, I am thoroughly inspired. Being able to connect with so many people at the click of the mouse is a huge blessing. I will be enjoying each and every blog I visit as the year progresses.

My inspiration has forced me to learn a little more blog code (css, or cascade style sheets). I also played around with GIMP a bit over the last couple of days to create some background images. The main wrapper of my blog is of our latest snow fall, thankfully nothing like the rest of the country- yikes! The post/text background, the darker grey area, is an image I created. This is what I like most about the blogging process, I think, because I like creating new images with digital photos.

Hopefully my blog is visually appealing to more than just me. I will probably change it again before too long.

Another blog inspired me to get rid of unused clothes.

There was a challenge posted but the blog says the page is gone. Maybe she’s doing the challenge, maybe not. Check out her blog next week, if you’re interested.

I do this fairly regularly but I knew I could find a few more items. After finding a couple of sweaters, I stumbled across a blog that inspired me to alter the sweaters to make new items. Just what I like to do. Hopefully you will see more on that topic.

I love all the blogs about the year in review. My 2010 is a blur, although a good blur. It went way too fast but it is good to get on to the next phase. The Christmas holiday time has been very enjoyable. My husband and I will both be getting back to work tomorrow, and to the regular (??) school schedule as the week progresses. We are savouring our final hours at home, enjoying the beautiful day. It is rather cold though so we are enjoying it from the inside. (outdoor temp- 34 degrees)

Anti-Procrastination Tuesday Up and Moving

I so want to be in bed right now. I had the intention of sleeping in, and by all means, 7am would be a late wake-up, if I hadn’t gone to bed after 1am. Alas, I am getting hubby and son off to the dentist so I am up.

This is good though since I read Amy’s blog, New Nostalgia, and the anti-procrastination update. I love Anti-procrastination Tuesday for the encouragement to get my projects done!

If you’ve read my earlier posts, you’ll see I am very busy with food preserving. Not the typical, methodical food preserving familiar to the end of Summer, but random, too-much-bought, not-using-it-fast-enough-but-don’t-want-to-waste-it food preserving. This is the cilantro I chopped up and froze. The “cubes” are stored in a freezer bag.

I bring home all the left-over apples from work so today I will be peeling and chopping them. Some I will sugar and spice so they are pie ready; straight from the freezer. The rest I am going to vacuum pack. When we want applesauce, we just make it then instead of making a bunch and canning, or however other people do it.

My sister is involved with a gleaner group and she left this bread with me. It is pretty hard now so I made a dish of bread pudding (as I was kissing my husband goodbye- it’s just that easy). The best bread puddings, French toast and anything egg-soaked are best when the bread is stale.

The last time I made applesauce, I used a crockpot recipe. It ended up a bit over-blended, more like apple butter. No one likes the texture so I am using the sauce in recipes. I added it to this bread pudding, just to see how it tastes.

My last food project today is to squeeze all these lemons so I can make lemon sorbet. Supposedly I get two tablespoons of juice for each lemon. I need to make sorbet for 22 so we’ll see if this works out.

Attempts with Card Making

A couple of weeks ago, I was invited to a Stamping Up workshop where they taught a couple of card making techniques. I like this kind of class because they supply all the materials and the step-by-step instructions for making a particular card, and in this case two different kinds of cards.

The theme was obviously Christmas. I love how simple and elegant these cards are and will implement these techniques, should I ever get the desire to make cards.

In all fairness, while I love this craft, I really struggle with the creativity. There are so many neat tools and beautiful papers, I end up getting overwhelmed.

This simple card is more my ability. Straight lines, one stamp with one ink, and a couple embellishments to make it sparkle. Quick and painless.

Unconventional Gleaning

As I have a short break between trips to band class, I realize how long it has been since I posted to my blog. So sad. It is my job that is taking up all my time.

One pleasant side effect of this job though has been all the left-over food I have been bringing home. This has been particularly helpful since I haven’t found much time to go grocery shopping.

I know, left-over food does not sound that great. Most of what I bring home is uncooked and unprepared, which is why no one else wants to bring it home. It would be such a shame to waste all the food that goes uneaten. Bananas are a staple. Particularly if they are overripe, which is great for making muffins. Apples past their prime have been wonderful for apple sauce and apple pies.

All the raw vegetables get a quick blanche and then I freeze them. We just got one of those sealer machines, too. The money I didn’t spend on food this month paid for the machine.

The vegetable selection has been wonderful, too. Not the same old vegetables, although we get a lot of broccoli and carrots.

This bag of dried fruit wasn’t a big hit but I just blend the fruit into smaller bits to add to oatmeal cookies.

Gleaning is a concept that can be looked down on because of the lesser-quality or the hard work. I love gleaning, especially in the unconventional sense. Where ever there is an abundance, I look for ways to not waste. Of course there are times when the food has to go. No more frozen meatballs.

I Was On a Roll

Anti-Procrastination Tuesday, Here I come!

When I started blogging, I was encouraged to think I could make a regular habit of posting. My mind was full of great post ideas, and I had my camera ready for impromptu photo ops. Link parties and regular followers helped keep me focused.

How long ago was that? Not very. Since then, as you can see by reading my earlier posts, my business has had a sudden boom. It is nearly impossible to spend time at my computer these days. I am encouraged to know there is a break coming though.

Procrastination around my home can create some real problems when I am away from the house as much as I have been. The laundry builds up, the ironing gets way out of control, and the biggest problem is keeping up on paper work for my business.

In order to get a few things under control, I set aside 30-45 minutes each day to pick three jobs. For instance, Saturday, I got all of my husband’s ironing done. I still have my pile- about 12 to 15 items, I think. I have many items that either need to be dropped off at the thrift store or posted to craigslist. I took one item and listed it- my Elna sewing machine. It didn’t work but I knew someone would like it since it is such a great machine. I even posted a couple of items to freecycle. Of course there are always items laying around my office so I find a few things to put away immediately.

Just getting a few things out of my way so my house is more in order helps me keep a busy schedule in check. Getting this post done and linked to Amy’s Blog, New Nostalgia is my big anti-procrastination accomplishment today. Yea! For Anti-Procrastination Tuesday.

My Business is Cleaning Airplanes

I never considered whether I would work while raising kids. Actually, I did work for a short time when the kids were little but I never had to as my husband has always taken his roll as provider very seriously. I grew up at the airport, working with my aviation mechanic dad and I have always had a job, or two. I started cleaning airplanes when I was in high school, for my dad. After my last child was born, my dad needed someone to do some cleaning and I knew it would work out well for me to do it.

When my husband was laid-off just after 911, I was able to turn my hobby of cleaning airplanes into a business. I developed a decent client list and worked enough to help keep our household running. This worked well until my husband was working again and the kids needed me back at home.

God was gracious and abundant when I needed the clients and He was gracious when he took them away. I prayed that I would only have as much work as was good for our family. For the last couple of years, my business has been very slow. My family life has been very busy.

Recently, since my daughter started driving, I have been less busy at home. When one of my previous clients called with more work, I gratefully accepted. I am thoroughly enjoying being at the airport daily and I love being able to help the entire department get on with their day. When I come home to be mom again, my family misses me, for the most part.

Another benefit of my working more is my boys are forced to handle the house by themselves. Their sister did her time and now the boys get theirs. They know they are capable. I know they are capable. When I am home, it seems they are hindered by my watchful eye. It’s better for them when I am not around.

A Sudden Change of Direction

I have been crazy busy for a few weeks. When I started this adventure of blogging, it was a way to fill my days with creativity. I figured I had the extra time since my business was very slow and I really wasn’t looking for any work. My daughter got her license and I saw a way to stay at home more while she did the extra kid-driving.

Funny how life works. One of my main customers found they needed a person to work on an almost-full-time basis. I love the work I do, and I really enjoy working for this customer so I opted to take the work.

It has been a whole lot busier than I imagined. Good busy, but very long days.

I love this part of the job. My tasks within this job have been greatly expanded so now I get to clean the hangar floors. I suppose this would be a little more drudgery if I didn’t have this very fun machine to drive. I love it! I want to clean the floor every week.

The work is not constant which is why I can do it. My kids still need me at home some of the time. Actually, part of my decision to work this much was to provide my oldest son an opportunity to take more responsibility around the house. It’s a whole lot easier for kids to be in charge of their responsibilities when their mother isn’t around, watching everything they do.

My daughter wrote this “how to do laundry” sheet for the boys.

Working outside of my home is not my primary interest, nor is it mandatory for our family, for which I am hugely grateful to my hard-working husband. While the work is hard, the hours can be a bit long, I am so blessed to get to do what I do. What do I do? I clean airplanes.

A Fall Boat Ride

Owning a boat in the Puget Sound is ultra fantastic on a gorgeous fall day. The weather was just beautiful to pass up an impromptu run around the Everett Marina.

The seals were out in force, showing off their beautiful smiles.

These two guys were bellowing quite a bit and there was a third one, swimming around the buoy.

My husband was just going to get a little work done on the boat but I’m so glad he had the idea to invite me to go for a quick ride.

Never Enough Pictures

I am so grateful for a lifetime of photos, which is why I am linking up with Heidi at Heart and Home.

I have been tearing through boxes and books of photos, sorting, rearranging and just otherwise looking for photos. When I do this, I always find a few photos I want to put up—somewhere. The problem is, where? I only have so much wall space, and I can barely see the books on the shelf for all the photo frames.

Despite the lack of space for all these photos, I am so grateful to have so many. I love being able to capture my children’s lives in snapshots. A picture is a thousand words, and most of the time, the kids look so happy in these moments in time.

Crazy, huh? I remember taking this photo of my daughter. She had just woken up from a much needed nap and was desperate for food.

Arts and Crafts are Life Skills

First, I have to say that I had wanted to post this yesterday. Now, because of my procrastination, I get to link this post to Anti-Procrastination Tuesday.

A couple of weeks ago, my two sons had to create a three-dimensional replica of the earth’s layers, with labels. There were basically no guidelines except it had to be three-dimensional.

Both boys complained because it required creativity and they thought it would take too long. I was so relieved when their father explained to them about how he doesn’t use the trig he learned but he wishes he had spent more time in arts and crafts as a student, since he actually uses those skills, such as all the work he did on our boat last year. Fiberglass is basically a very expensive form of paper mache. Connor chose to make his replica out of paper mache. We mixed a pan of flour and water. He did not appreciate having to get his hands wet and gooey. That’s just how he has always been. It dried fairly quickly as we were having some fantastically warm weather. As for painting, I just know I gave him some paints and it got done. I think Connor spent thirty minutes creating his project, not including drying time. Once he started working on it, he realized it wasn’t that hard. I don’t know if he was proud of his accomplishment but he was definitely happy to be done.

Colin chose to make his replica from rice krispy cereal, actually chocolate krispies. He used jell-o to simulate hot lava. I think the blue was frosting and the green is sugar sprinkles. Not quite accurate but very tasty.

Now, as you can see, I have been very much procrastinating in getting my house vacuumed. My Roomba, DEB (Doing Everything Better) can only do so much. It’s my turn to get all the dust bunnies cleaned up.

Mission Aviation and Gracia Burnham

Instead of our normal Wednesday night Bible study, my family and I were treated to attend a talk given by Gracia Burnham. Being the daughter of a Baptist-raised father and attending mainly Baptist churches throughout my childhood, we spent a lot of Sundays and evenings listening to missionaries tell of their experiences. I will be honest that I didn’t always find it enjoyable or whorthwhile. Fortunately, this lifestyle is so ingrained in me now, I can appreciate how much I have learned, and how important it is to consider these people; to always be in prayer for them.

Now my dad is involved in an aviation missions group, MATA- Mission Aviation Training Academy. Some of the leaders of that organization are dear friends with Gracia Burnham so while she is in town for Missions Fest, she was honored to be invited to the MATA weekly meeting and speak. My son got to hear her at the Oshkosh air show when he was there with my parents in 2009.

The Martin & Gracia Burnham Foundation

If you are not familiar with Gracia, she and her husband were taken as hostages from a resort in the Philippians, in June of 1991. Their story was a major news event. Unfortunately her husband did not survive the ordeal but she was freed after a year of being held in captivity. Her story is amazing and I am going to cling to her words of experience so I do not get dragged down in my own supposed trials. Gracia endured a true trial and she is sharing her experience so others will come to know Christ.

I cannot even begin to re-explain what she talked about because I wouldn’t tell it right. Get her book. If you have an opportunity to see her in person, or any missionary, go hear them. Renew your desire to live for Christ, to become like Christ, each day.

Her book, In the Presence of My Enemies recounts this horrific experience, and the faith and love that got her through this time. I am completely overwhelmed knowing people endure these events and live to tell about it. Whether I am able to get this book for my kindle, or a hard copy, I am looking very forward to reading more about Martin and Gracia Burnham.
